Save Hundreds Per Year By Lowering Your Cell Phone Bill
Updated 10/14/16
How much are you willing to spend on your phone? History shows that certain technologies get cheaper over time. Not cell phones and their service unfortunately.
According to CBS News, the average monthly cell phone bill has soared to almost $150/month while the most expensive carriers (ranked from most expensive to least) include: Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile.
About 11 years ago when I was in high school, I remember my Sprint phone bill being somewhere around $400/month each month. I was a teen then and I felt so bad that my parents had to split the bill in half in order to pay it each month since I didn’t have a job yet.
Upon entering adulthood, I stuck with prepaid phones to keep my bill low and that worked just fine. I stuck with Android smartphones with prepaid/no-contract. Yet and still, my monthly bill was around $50 – $65 which added up to $600+ per year.
While my monthly cell phone bill was lower than most Americans, I wasn’t impressed with the service I was receiving and felt like my phone was dropping so many calls and literally falling to pieces after a so many months that it wasn’t even worth paying the bill anymore
I went a few months without a phone to detach myself from my dependency on it, then I found out about Republic Wireless.
I’ve Been Using Republic Wireless For Over a Year and I’m Loving It
Republic Wireless is a cell phone company that offers crazy inexpensive plans starting at $15. They offer no contracts and allow you to change your plan twice a month for free. The best part though, is that they don’t sell wimpy track phones to go with their affordable service. Republic Wireless customers all Motorola smartphones and just recently added Samsung phones like the Galaxy and LG phones because let’s face it, it’s the 21st century.
I have the Moto G and it’s definitely one of the better smartphones that I’ve owned. We all want apps, a working camera, music and the ability to browse the web on our cell phones and there’s nothing wrong with that. Paying an arm and a leg for these services though, is just something I’m not willing to do.
Republic Wireless is able to keep their plans so low by allowing customers to make calls and send texts over the internet instead of running on a network of cell towers all the time. Their $15 plan is wifi only and I’ve tried this one and it works well if you’re planning on always being near a good WiFi connection. However, I’d recommend the other plans because they use wifi to call and text and a cell network as well so you can use your phone when you’re not around a strong WiFi connection. This allows your phone to work all the time and operate just as efficient as that new iPhone and not just when you’re around wifi.
Pros of Using Republic Wireless
Free WiFi is Everywhere
I initially started using the cheapest plan to try to phone out and my intentions were to jump to the $20 plan that allows you to have data but I didn’t need to upgrade as soon as I planned.
After getting my Republic Wireless phone, I realized that free WiFi is literally everywhere. I’m not talking about tapping into other people’s private WiFi networks because that would be wrong. I’m talking about FREE guest WiFi available for everyone to use.
When I’m at home, my phone automatically connects to my own WiFi network and use it like normal without having our internet bill go up at all or my data charges. It there’s free WiFi at my job, the gym, coffee shops, restaurants, etc. you’ll definitely enjoy this phone as well.
Republic Wireless Cuts Your Phone Bill by At Least Half
I’m on the $25 plan now with Republic Wireless and that means I only pay around $300 per year for phone phone bill after taxes which is about half of what I paid when I prepaid phones with other carriers.
If you are switching from an expensive contract phone carrier to Republic Wireless, you could save even more money by making the switch.
If You Don’t Use All Your Data, Now You Can Get Refunded For It
Republic Wireless recently introduced a data refund plan called 4G Cell Data on Demand. It’s very easy to use. You simply:
- Choose a phone and monthly plan that best fits your needs
- Text, call and use apps just like normal
- Add 4G cell data on demand whenever you need it
- At the end of the month, you’ll get refunded for the data you don’t use
IT’S THAT SIMPLE. With Republic Wireless, you’ll naturally use less data and more wifi so this sounds like a great option. I’ve been getting by fine for several months without data but I’m compelled to try this new plan to see how much I can get credited back to my account and you should too if you save more money and not be tied down by your cell phone bill.
Cons to Consider
WiFi Only Plan is Limited
While the WiFi only plan is very affordable, the downside is that your phone service becomes pretty obsolete when you leave your connection. This is why if you plan on using your phone a lot while you’re on the go and you don’t have a hot spot connection, I’d recommend getting a different plan with Republic Wireless so you can text and make calls on a cell network too.
If you’d like to try the service out, you can always get started with the $15 plan, but the good news is that you can upgrade your plan at any time during the month when you need to.
Some of the Phones Are Pricey
I love the prices of the cell phone plans, but the prices of the phones themselves are pretty high. I understand that you get what you pay for though and I enjoy the quality of my phone over other cheaper phones I’ve purchased in the past that have easily broken down on me.
If you are switching to Republic Wireless from another carrier, this is one loop hole you can try out. Republic Wireless allows you to bring your current phone with you and connect it to your service as long as you have one of the phones mentioned below.
I really like this option because it’s nice (and saves money) to just switch carriers and keep your phone is you already have a phone that is compatible with Republic Wireless’ service.
Is Republic Wireless Right For You?
If you like the idea of having a lower cell phone bill while being able to keep your smartphone, Republic Wireless should be a top contender especially if you are okay with tapping into your WiFi network when available to use your phone like normal. Trying Republic Wireless is also risk-free since there’s a 14-day money back guarantee.
By spending less money on your phone each month you can save so much money to put toward other expenses that are more important to you. Most people save $2,000+/year on average by switching to Republic Wireless and that can be a nice extra chunk of money to throw toward your debt or put into a savings account.
Have you signed up yet? How high is your cell phone bill currently? What could you use your savings for if you switched to Republic Wireless?
