The most romantic day of the year is around the corner and if you’re anything like me, you are still trying to find ways to show your significant other how much you care without breaking the bank.

Although most people are still in financial recovery mode from the Christmas holiday season, Valentine’s Day is approaching quickly and with it comes the prospect of going in the hole even further with gift and events.

While it can be difficult to find fun, exciting and cost-effective ways to express your love for your honey fear not because you’ll both fall in love with this list of awesome cheap Valentine’s Day date ideas.

When Cupid Met Valentine: A Brief History of Valentine’s Day

If you’re a stranger to the history of this romantic holiday, Valentine’s Day is truly formed from a legend.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica Valentine’s Day has many different stories surrounding its origin, making it nearly impossible to find out exactly how this day became the noted day of romantic love. However, one legend has it that a priest named Valentine was made a martyr by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus around 270 CE.

It’s said that the priest became friends with the emperor’s daughter, even healing her from blindness.  He signed a letter to her, “from your Valentine” and this became a tag line for love between those who have a deeper bond, whether platonic or romantic.

Another account is that Valentine (who is the patron saint of lovers, epileptics and beekeepers in case you were wondering) defied the emperor’s command and decided to marry couples in secret so the men wouldn’t have to go to war.  It’s no wonder that Valentine’s Day is noted as a lovers’ festival and feast day which has been documented back to the 14th century.

While there are so many different versions of this legendary figure, one thing that is for sure is that Valentine’s mystery has played a large role in society’s view of love. Common gifts of candy, flowers (red roses, anyone?) have become the international symbol of love on this day and the day is extremely popular for proposals and weddings.

How will Valentine’s mystery show up in your Valentine’s Day celebrations this year?
